The only two unbeaten teams left in North conference 2 met on a very cold Sunday night at Concord Sports centre in Sheffield. The unlikely venue needed in place of Hallams own turf due to unprecedented rain that week. The league itself had facilitated this game being played as a double header with the Sheffield Sabres playing Huddersfield Hawks on the same pitch with the same officials one after the other. The game was reduced in length to 12 minute quarters which meant 12 minutes of game time would be lost.
Hallam won the toss and elected to return the kickoff. Hallam had a clear game plan and with injury forcing Hallam QB David Saul to the sideline the fortunes of the Hallam offence were placed in the Hands of back up Mike Wood. Instructions were clear. Solid ball control, nothing fancy and put the ball in the hands of the playmakers. From the off Hallam dominated proceedings. They began the drive inside Hallam territory and handed the ball to the three headed monster that is Darren Gayle, Mike Whitson and Danny Williamson. Off the back of some power dives and off tackle runs the ball was taken down field in an eleven play 6 ½ minute drive. It culminated with Danny Williamson going in for the go ahead score from the 3 yard line. Williamson then ran in the two point conversion for the 8-0 lead.
Hallam kicked off leaving Lancaster on the 20 yard line. Missed tackles frustrated Hallam as they allowed Lancaster to slowly begin moving the ball down field. Hallam were giving up silly yards in an attempt to make big plays instead of wrapping up the ball carrier. However normal business was resumed during the drive when Jacob Muncey and Satnam Singh combined on consecutive plays to stall the Lancaster drive and forcing an errant pass on a forth down. This was the last action of the first quarter which went by in the blink of an eye.
The second quarter began with both teams swapping 3 and outs. Following this Hallam began the next drive just inside their own half. Nice runs from Whitson and Gayle were complimented by Tham Mafu and late into the second quarter and 48 yards later Danny Williamson ran another short (2 yard) run into the endzone. Hallam failed on the conversion and led 14-0 with little time left for Lancaster to respond. The half ended with the score 14-0 and Hallam still with work to do.
The 3rd quarter saw the Hallam go to and fro with their defensive production. Good plays in the backfield were negated by broken plays that resulted in big gains for the Lancaster offence Sat Singh and Martin Steele making tackles to prevent further advances. Hallam though managed to step up their game on defence when Danny Williamson levelled a ball carrier and forced the fumble that Chris Webber was grateful to recover. Williamson then continued his one man destruction of Lancaster when two plays later he took the ball 40 yards on a run into the endzone. Mike Whitson got the 2 point conversion run and Hallam led 22-0. Lancaster then went 3 and out on their next drive following a solid tackle from Tham Mafu and then an interception of an errant Lancaster pass. Hallam however were also unable to move the ball the next series and the quarter ended with Hallam leading 22-6.
The 4th quarter saw Lancaster again make huge gains from broken plays and their QB ran 35 yards having been flushed out of the pocket only being tackled at the 9 yard line by Luke Richards. Finally Hallams defence showed their class and four plays from Lancaster saw six yards total offence and a turnover on downs. Disaster struck on the very next play when Mike Wood the backup quarterback fumbled the snap with centre Bruce Robertson and the ball rolled into the endzone where a grateful Lancaster defence fell on it. Lancaster failed on their 2 point effort.
Hallam changed up the running game putting in Rookie Danny Pyle and Richard Griffith and these two helped Danny Williamson grind out the minutes and yards as the half was ticking down. Leaving only enough time for Lancaster to run four more plays which they failed to take advantage of, time expired and Hallam went 6-0.
Notable performances on the day
Danny Williamson 10 Rushes, 95 yards and 3 TD’s
