As the Warriors rolled into Hull it appeared as though they would be playing ice hockey. The rugby matches at the same location had been cancelled that day. The football lads were obviously made of sterner stuff.

Hallam spent 45 minutes doing what the Hull team should have done…getting the frozen pitch roughed up in some attempt to thaw out the ground. Flat preparations leading to flat performance. This wasn’t a good performance by Hallam. In particular their offence fumbled the ball six times. The blocking at times was none existent and overall had Hull been anything like a threat they may have pushed Hallam harder. As it was Hull were thankful to some inept officiating to stay in the game. If any game highlighted how bad games can be without an official crew then this was it. It was truly awful. It wasn’t the well meaning young man that stepped up who was to blame as he did his best. It was just his best was terrible and the league need to look at other avenues to get competent officiating at uncovered games. But hey lets not dwell in the past lets go through the highlights of the game and move on.

Hallam won the toss and elected to receive. And sure enough they incurred a penalty on their first play for a false start. Matters did improve though two plays later when Danny Williamson reeled off a 38 yard run only for the first fumble of the game to end the drive deep in Hull territory. The Hallam defence were well prepared for their shift and the second play saw Martin Steele make a huge tackle for a loss behind the Hull scrimmage line. The next play saw the first of many poor penalties given against Hallam, it was the shape of things to come. Two plays later though Chris Webber forced and recovered a fumble giving Hallam the ball on the half way line. Darren Gayle ran the first play for 20 yards and then Mike Whitson broke a 30 yard run for a touchdown. Darren Gayle running in the 2 point conversion to make the score 8-0 in Hallams favour.
The Hallam defence then went 3 and out forcing Hull deep into its backfield before Anthony Marsden forced the fumble giving Hallam the ball back. Another series of good runs was ended by another fumble. The Hallam defence again forcing a 3 and out to see the end of the first quarter. Hallamm went further ahead off a QB keeper that saw David Saul run 11 yards for the score. The 2 point conversion was unsuccessful 14-0. The Hallam defence were then on the field for eight plays which saw them concede 3 penalties. None of which were seen by anyone other than the Hull official. However Hull couldn’t move the ball off their own efforts and the half ended with a Hallam gang tackle.
The second half saw Hull continue being unable to move the ball on Hallam without the help of a penalty and they had to punt the ball away. The second half saw Danny Pyle and Tham Mafu get the ball and four plays later Danny Pyle ran in his first rushing touchdown from 14 yards, The 2 point conversion failing again 20-0. The Hallam defence again assisted by the yellow duster took five plays to end the next Hull drive with a Chris Webber interception. Hallam then put together their best drive of the day. Ten plays saw the ball move 40 yards with another Danny Pyle run from 13 yards capping the series off 26-0. The Hallam defence went 3 and out again as the half ended.

The fourth quarter was the scene of another Hallam fumble which ended another promising drive. Another Hull series was built off the back of some further ridiculous calls by the man in the middle but eventually his arm got tired and Hull had to punt. Hallam continued to pound the ball but also allowed Dvid Saul to go air borne. He connected on passes of 29 and 11 yards to Gaz Alfadal and Tham Mafu. Mafu added further yards on the ground before Saul connected with Whitson for 6 more yards. The series ended though when a Saul pass was batted down on 4th and 3. The Hallam defence didn’t let up and this time Sat Singh pulled in an interception returning it to the 9 yard line..Danny Williamson ran the ball in from 9 yards to extend the lead and then ran in his own 2 point conversion to make the score 34-0. The game was over four plays later when Hull again failed to secure yardage off the back of some solid Hallam defensive play.

This was not a vintage Hallam performance. The defense however was solid with the D line and Jacob Muncey in particular dominating their opposite number. The linebackers were again making big plays behind the line of scrimmage and they held Hull to 4 total yards on the day. Penalties aside they dominated Hull from start to finish. Offensively Hallam need to improve in a number of areas in particular ball protection and blocking. These will be addressed in the coming training sessions.

Notable stats on the day.
Hallam had 342 offensive yards on the day.
Danny Pyle had 74 yards and 2 TD’s , Mike Whitson 52 yards and a TD, Danny Williamson 54 yards and a TD and Darren Gayle had 47 yards.

Defense held Hull to 4 yards in total offence.
Chris Webber had 4 tackles a fumble and interception, Jacob Muncey had 4 tackles, Matt Marsden 6 tackles, Anthony Marsden 5 tackles, Martin Steele 5 tackles, Sat Singh 4 tackles and an interception.
